Bioterrorism Epidemiology Section

The newly established Bioterrorism (BT) team of the Infectious Diseases Branch is part of a multidisciplinary CDHS initiative to strengthen public health infrastructure to detect, identify, investigate, and control illnesses due to biological or chemical terrorist attacks. The team will focus on enhancing state and local health surveillance and epidemiologic response capacity for diseases due to biological agents such as anthrax, botulism, brucellosis, smallpox, tularemia, and viral hemorrhagic fever. If a suspected bioterrorism event occurs, the BT team will also provide epidemiologic assistance and coordination to the local health departments. Public health and epidemiologic response to terrorist attacks involving chemical agents will be in coordination with staff from the Division of Environmental and Occupational Disease Control.
