The Skin Cancer Prevention
Program (SCPP) is a statewide initiative that works in cooperation
with the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention to decrease future
new cases of skin cancer among Californians. SCPP promotes the integration
of sun-protection education materials, policies, and environmental
supports (shade trees and structures) especially within entities that
provide outdoor recreation or occupational pursuits. SCPP provides
conference presentations and conducts media campaigns to encourage
population-wide practice of sun safety behaviors.
Mission Statement
The Skin Cancer Prevention
Program is working to help businesses, organizations, and individuals
understand why and how to guard themselves from unprotected exposure
to sunlight, since ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight cause 90 percent
of non-melanoma skin cancer.
Target Audience
SCPP works primarily with
two population groups to promote sun-safety practices and policies: (1)
children under 14 years of age, their parents and other care givers;
and (2) outdoor occupational venues. Child care centers, elementary through
high school, park and recreation facilities, and outdoor-based work sites
are currently the principal focus of this program's efforts. Yet all California
residents are eligible to receive educational services from SCPP.
Tools & Strategies
SCPP has developed sun-safety
education, policy, and promotional materials for use with the target
audiences listed above. A basic skin cancer prevention education package
for child care sites is available that includes a curriculum, video,
poster, and guidelines for outdoor play. The package is
available at no cost to child care centers, and portions of the package
can be immediately downloaded from this site.
SCPP also offers a sun
safety kit for parks and recreation facilities and outdoor-based
