Research and Evaluation Unit Overview
2001 California Dietary Practices Survey (CDPS) The 2003 California Dietary Practices Survey (CDPS) monitors dietary trends among California adults and tracts their progress towards meeting the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2000), Healthy People 2010 objectives, and the California Daily Food Guide (1990). This data cover consumption of fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, high fiber cereals, beans, milk, cheese, and high fat, low nutrient foods. CDPS also obtains information on related knowledge and behaviors, out-of-home eating, food security, Food Stamps program participation, access to fruits and vegetables and physical activity in worksites and home neighborhoods.

2001 & 2003 CalCHEEPS The 2005 California Children’s Healthy Eating and Exercise Practices Survey (CalCHEEPS) data tables provide detailed information about California children’s fruit and vegetable consumption, physical and sedentary activity, high calorie, low nutrient food consumption, knowledge and awareness of the Power Play! Campaign, and factors that influence these behaviors including out-of-home eating, school environment, poverty status, and weight status. For more information regarding the CalCHEEPS data tables, contact Angie Jo Keihner, MS at Angie.Keihner@cdph.ca.gov.

CalCHEEPS Icon CalCHEEPS Report
This report provides a new analysis of the 1999 California Children’s Healthy Eating and Exercise Practices Survey and offers a snapshot of a typical school day for 9- to 11-year-old children. The report identifies useful methods for improving the impact of nutrition education and physical activity interventions among children. These findings can help parents, schools, and community stakeholders respond to the growing concern about low fruit and vegetable consumption, lack of regular physical activity and the rise in overweight among children.

Goals

  • Provide valuable state-specific health statistics and data through its statewide surveys.
  • Develop and maintain an effective evaluation system to use in planning and evaluating all projects overseen, managed, or funded by CPNS.
  • Provide research support to carry out evaluations of specific CPNS special projects.
  • Monitor extramural research projects that examine promising areas for technology transfer in nutrition, social marketing, and physical activity.

Another function of the Research and Evaluation Unit is to provide support to staff, partners, and other professionals on research questions about the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and chronic disease, determinants of fruit and vegetable consumption, and other related information.
