- Preventive Medicine focuses on health promotion and disease and
disability prevention.
- The mission of the California Department of
Health Services (DHS) Preventive Medicine Residency Program is to develop public health
physicians who can provide strong leadership in California public health agencies.
- Fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education since 1980 as a postgraduate medical education program in General Preventive
Medicine/Public Health.
- One- or two-year (PGY3 only, or PGY2 and PGY3)
Residency positions
available; PGY3/Practicum Residents may be placed in DHS offices in Sacramento or
Berkeley, or in local health departments throughout California.
- Applicants must have a California medical license to be eligible for
the Residency.
As of 2006, Graduates are employed in a variety of settings:
- California State & Local Health Departments
(46 graduates),
- Health Departments outside of California (7 graduates),
- Federal agencies (15 graduates),
- California non-health department employment (18 graduates),
- Non-health department employment outside California (8 graduates).
