(Completed OHB Activity - Dates: 2001-2005)
Background
The Occupational Health Branch at
the California Department of Health Services initiated the project
BuildSafe California to help construction companies improve their safety
programs in the area of tailgate trainings.
Effective tailgate trainings are a critical part of a safe construction
jobsite.
Purpose
OHB conducted 4-hour trainings throughout the
state of California to build the capacity of contractors and supervisors
to make better use of the Cal/OSHA requirement of doing
tailgate trainings every 10 working days. The primary audience was small
contractors, but medium and larger contractors and union representatives
also attended.
At the trainings, attendees:
- Heard a contractor talk about why, how, and when to conduct tailgate
trainings
- Learned about effective training techniques to improve safety
presentations
- Assessed the quality of their company's tailgate trainings to
identify areas for improvement
- Found out what Cal/OSHA is looking for in a construction safety
program
- Received a tailgate training kit in English/Spanish including 23
Safety Break topic cards
- Received a certificate of course completion and other health and
safety resource materials
Who Attended?
Over 1400 contractors and
supervisors attended trainings conducted in 21 locations: Los Angeles,
Oakland, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Sacramento, Concord, Glendale, Santa
Ana, Fresno, Bakersfield, Riverside, Oxnard, San Jose, Carson, Monterey
Park, San Diego, Chico, Redding, Eureka, Pasadena, and Long Beach.

BuildSafe Tailgate Training Materials - Safety
Break Cards
BuildSafe produced a health and safety tailgate
training kit in English and Spanish. The kit consists of Safety Break
cards that cover 23 general construction safety topics and are linked to
information in the Cal/OSHA Pocket Guide for the Construction Industry.
The kit includes instructions on how to use the cards and how to design a
safety training that meets a specific worksite’s needs. These cards are
simple to use and designed to improve the quality of tailgates. These
materials were provided to all attendees and are now available on our
website:

Conducting Effective Tailgate Trainings
(11 page article)
Workers in the construction industry have a high risk for injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.
Effective tailgate trainings (brief jobsite safety meetings) can be a powerful tool to promote
hazard awareness and safe work practices. OHB’s BuildSafe California project conducted
training-of-trainers for over 1,500 construction contractors and supervisors to improve
their ability to provide effective tailgate trainings. This article in the journal Health
Promotion Practice describes the intervention and evaluation findings.
