Fingerprint Application Process

THE LIVE SCAN PROCESS IS REPLACING FINGERPRINT CARDS. Live Scan technology electronically transmits fingerprints directly to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and reduces delays with processing hardcopy cards. Live scan fingerprints that result in clearances are now transmitted electronically to the ATCS CNA/HHA/CHT Certification Unit (i.e., Registry), usually within three business days.

DOJ fingerprint results are sent to the Aide and Technician Certification Section (ATCS) for certification as a nurse assistant or home health aide. DOJ also send fingerprint results to ATCS for certain employees of Intermediate Care Facilities for the Developmentally Disabled, Adult Day Health Care facilities, and Home Health Agencies.

Individuals should obtain a Request for Live Scan Service form (BCII 8016) from their training program or long term care employer before having their fingerprints scanned. Follow the "sample" instructions that ATCS provides based upon the type of application requested. The certified live scan operator will complete the transaction section of the BCII 8016 form.

To locate a live scan site in your area and to schedule an appointment for a California ONLY background check:
