Infant Death Profiles by ZIP Code

This data table presents California’s 1999-2001 resident infant deaths and live births by ZIP Code and by key health status indicators (infants birthweight, trimester prenatal care began, race/ethnicity of mother and the leading causes of infant death). Infant deaths by these key health status indicators at the ZIP Code level provide significantly more detail than countywide data in monitoring a community’s health status. Moreover, these data can be used to perform small area analysis to identify and target areas within cities and counties where public health programs may be needed.

1999-2001

Data Source/Limitations

The data shown in these tables were obtained from the birth cohort files. The birth cohort files link data from birth and death certificates registered in California. Data are presented for ZIP Codes with five or more infant deaths in the three year period 1999-2001. When examining data in ZIP Codes with very small numbers of deaths (n < 100), caution needs to be exercised because very small numbers may be unreliable and subject to significant variability from one year to the next. Three years of combined data are presented in this report to minimize the problem of small numbers. Additional information concerning the data source and limitations is discussed in more detail in the Vital Statistics of California, 2003.

Data Variables

The causes of death selected for this table are the leading causes of infant death among California’s residents. The three causes of death provided in this data table are listed in rank order for California. The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) was used to code the causes of death starting with the year 1999. The abbreviations and respective descriptions of the three leading causes of death in this table are:

Abbreviation Cause of Death ICD 10 (1999 to present)
CONG MAL Congential Malformations, Deformations and Chromosomal Abnormalities Q00-Q99
SHORT GEST Disorders of Short Gestation and Low Birthweight P07
SIDS Sudden Infant Death Syndrome R95
OTH All Other Causes Residual

ZIP Codes

The ZIP Codes on these tables are based on the mother's residence at the time of delivery. If you need assistance finding all the ZIP Codes associated with a city or town, or identifying a particular ZIP Code, please use the United States Postal Service's ZIP Code Lookup.
