The Office of Health Information and Research (OHIR) is an office within
the Center for Health Statistics. OHIR is responsible for
coordinating the development of health information systems and conducting research relating to the health status
of California's population.
OHIR is composed of two sections:
Planning and Data Analysis Section (PDAS)
PDAS is responsible for maintaining, analyzing, and distributing data needed for assessing the health status
of Californians. PDAS compiles and analyzes data pertaining to key health status indicators for California's
counties and produces related reports. The section assists the department's programs in developing common data
sets and standard data definitions, and in sharing and linking health information among their various databases.
Vital Statistics Section (VSS)
VSS is responsible for maintaining, analyzing, distributing, and improving the data contained within
California's electronic vital statistics system. VSS maintains electronic Statistical Master Files of live births,
deaths, and fetal deaths. This section produces the Birth Cohort File of births, linked infant deaths, and fetal
deaths. VSS analyzes the data contained in the vital statistics files and produces annual vital statistics reports
for California. VSS processes requests for copies of vital statistics files, data tables and reports, and special
data analyses and provides these in personal computer, Internet, mainframe, and paper formats. This section
provides technical assistance to the Department's programs in using California's vital statistics data and
applying appropriate statistical analysis for purposes of public health research, program planning, and
evaluation.
