Our Mission and Vision
The mission of the Cancer Detection Section is to save lives by preventing and reducing the devastating effects of cancer for all Californians through early detection, diagnosis and treatment, with special emphasis on the underserved.

The vision of the Cancer Detection Section is to:

  • Reduce the disparities in the cancer burden.
  • Ensure that all Californians have access to high quality cancer education, early detection, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Influence healthcare systems to provide quality services.
  • Have a valued and expert workforce.
  • Be a leader in cancer detection and control.

The Cancer Detection Section (CDS) is part of the California Department of Public Health's Chronic Disease and Injury Control Division. CDS manages multi-faceted public health programs for breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnosis, and prostate cancer treatment. CDS also offers services to reduce heart disease and stroke risk through the Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) Program.

Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts

Helping underserved women receive free breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services. Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts is funded by a federal grant and state tobacco tax revenue.

  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of death for women in California.
  • One in eight women will develop breast cancer.
  • Regular screening for breast cancer can detect cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage and save lives. There is 96% survival rate over 5-year period.
  • Cervical cancer is nearly 100% preventable with regular screening.

Prostate Cancer Treatment Program

Helping underserved men receive free prostate cancer treatment services. IMProving Access,  Counseling & Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer (IMPACTis operated under contract by the University of California, Los Angeles.

  • Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in California men.
  • One in six men will develop prostate cancer.
  • Men with prostate cancer have a better chance of long-term survival when treatment begins at an early stage of the disease.
Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) Program

Helping underserved women reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) through timely, high quality screening, education and intervention for elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure in Latina women ages 40-64. WISEWOMAN is funded by a federal grant and state tobacco tax revenue.

  • CVD accounts for 54% of all deaths in the US. 
  • CVD is the leading cause of death for US women
  • Heart disease death rates in Latina women age 35+ living in California are higher than the national average.
  • Latinas have higher prevalence of overweight, sedentary lifestyles, and diabetes than most other race/ethnic groups.
