The UCSD ARCC was established in 1985 and received funding form the
California Department of Health Services (CDHS) for 1985 - 1998. The Alzheimer's
Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center (ADDTC) is
instrumental in educational activities, targeting medical students, physicians,
nurses, social workers, nursing home administrators and staff, and caregivers of
patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), to improve the assessment and care
provided to patients with AD. The ADDTC interacts very productively with the National
Institute on Aging (NIA)-funded Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) and
with investigators at UCSD to support clinical research projects on AD.
The presence of the ADDTC is of key importance for UCSD maintaining NIA funding
of over $2 million per year for clinical and basic research activities in AD,
National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) funding of a Geriatric Psychiatry
Clinical Research Center, and an NIA-funded Caregiver Coping study.
The current funding provided by
CDHS for
Alzheimer's Disease Research Center of California (ARCC) will continue to
provide leverage for these ongoing federally funded research programs. The
ADDTC has made the transition into an ARCC to carry out the mandate of
translational research which will impact the care of patients with AD in San
Diego.
