The University of California, Davis ARCC was established in 1985.  It is a unit of the Department of Neurology, UC Davis School of Medicine. The Center was located at the Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley from 1985 until 1997, when it was relocated to the Department of Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS) in Martinez.

In 1991, this Alzheimer's Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Center (ADDTC), in partnership with the UC Davis ADDTC in Sacramento, successfully competed for an Alzheimer's Disease Center (ADC) grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA). This grant was renewed in 1996 and in 2001. The NIA-ADC grant provides core support for research infrastructure at both sites. Using NIA-ADC funds, the two ARCCs have implemented a uniform clinical evaluation program, an integrated common database, standardized research protocols, a brain bank, and integrated educational and outreach efforts. The ARCC and NIA-ADC resources have in turn been critical to obtaining several additional research projects, including a major Program Project Grant on vascular dementia and an epidemiologic study of aging and dementia in the Hispanic community. In 1993, the ADC submitted a successful application to the NIA to fund minority outreach clinics. Minority outreach remains a major emphasis of both the UC Davis Centers, with a particular emphasis on African Americans.   The UC Davis - Martinez Center enjoys additional core resources because of its close connection to the VANCHCS. Key clinical staff have VA medical staff appointments and are able to facilitate Veterans treatment within the VA system. Community patients are also seen at the Center.
