The University of California, Irvine (UCI) ARCC, established in 1989, operates within the Institute for Brain Aging and Dementia located on
the main UCI campus. The Center provides the infrastructure and support for the
recruiting and diagnosis of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, the supplying of
well-characterized patients to investigators for research, the education of
caregivers and professionals in the community, and the translation of research
into practice. The Center seeks to extend services to minority and less-represented elderly individuals through joint community programs and other
collaborative associations. The ARCC fulfills a unique niche. The ARCC recruits a wide
variety of patients in addition to those with Alzheimer’s disease, such as those
with mild cognitive impairment, vascular dementia, complex dementias, etc. This
provides a population that represents a cross-section of the dementias facing
the elderly. The ARCC also sponsors extensive outreach programs into the
community, educational conferences, special workshops for community
professionals, and an annual conference sponsored jointly with the Alzheimer’s
Association. Finally, the ARCC serves to translate basic findings into practice
within the community.
The current University California, Irvine ARCC Center focuses on three areas in AD
research and care: diagnosis, intervention, and cost-effectiveness. These areas
will be addressed through projects aimed at improving diagnostic technology and
treatment strategies as well as economical translation of findings into the
broader health care community. Better behavioral and pharmaceutical
interventions should be developed in tandem. The current health care delivery
environment and constrained budgets in both the public and private sectors
require solutions that are cost-effective for patients, caregivers, and
businesses.
